Ranbir Kapoor starrer Animal has been released in theatres. The film is getting mixed reviews. While many people like Ranbir in the character of Ranvijay, many people are also criticizing him fiercely. Ranbir's character is described as anti-women. Singer-actor Swanand Kirkire also appeared unhappy with Ranbir's character in the film. He tweeted and wrote - After watching the movie Animal Today, I felt pity for the women of today's generation.
'Ranvijay' demeans women
Swanand Kirkire watched the film Animal directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga and found many shortcomings in it. According to Swanand, the director has created this new generation man, who raise his hand on a woman and considers it as his manhood. Swanand wrote - Mehboob Khan's - Aurat, Gurudutt's - Saheb Biwi Aur Ghulam, Hrishikesh Mukherjee's - Anupama, Shyam Benegal's Ankur and Bhumika, Ketan Mehta's Mirch Masala, Sudhir Mishra's Main Zinda Hoon, Gauri Shinde's English Vinglish, Bahl's Queen, Shoojit Sircar's Piku etc.
There are many such films in Indian cinema, which taught me how to respect a woman, her rights, and her autonomy. And despite understanding everything, there are still so many shortcomings in this age-old thinking. I don't know whether I succeeded or not, but even today I am constantly trying to improve myself.
All thanks to the cinema. But today after watching the movie Animal, I felt pity for the women of today's generation! Again a new man has been prepared for you, who is more scary, he does not respect you that much and considers it his manhood to bow down, suppress, and be proud of you. Girls of today's generation, when you were sitting in that cinema hall clapping when Rashmika got beaten, in my mind I paid tribute to every idea of equality. I have come home. Despondent, dejected and weak!
Indian cinema would be ashamed...
Swanand further wrote - In that dialogue of Ranbir in which he defines alpha male and says that the men who cannot become alpha, become poets to get the pleasure of all the women and start promising to bring the moon and stars by breaking them. I am a poet! I do poetry to live! Is there a place for me? A movie is making a lot of money and the glorious history of Indian cinema is being put to shame! In my opinion, this film will determine the future of Indian cinema afresh, in a different, terrible and dangerous direction!
This post of Swanand has started a new debate. Users are also commenting on this and relating to his words. One said- 'There will be no boycott for this movie, it doesn't hurt anyone's sentiments! You can understand sir, in which direction the society is going! But we are proud that there is a sensitive man like you in this society! But it is dangerous for teenagers because their role models are those from this movie! Another wrote - 'Violence is being glorified. We will not agree until we taste the bitterness of violence.
However, this is not the first time that someone has raised questions about a film directed by Sandeep. There was a lot of controversy regarding Shahid Kapoor starrer film Kabir Singh. Anil Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, and Bobby Deol are in lead roles along with Ranbir Kapoor in Animal. This film is doing well at the box office. The film has so far made a gross worldwide collection of Rs 236 crore.
